"This Mental Illness" describes the uncertainty of dealing with mental illness and the stigma that those seeking help often face. The lyrics give a message of hope and encouragement, contrasted with a dark, driving bass riff.
I never knew the toll it took from keeping to myself,
Mental breakdown was a takedown, had to go get help.
I thought that if I went for help, I'd get a diagnosis,
Of autism, bipolarism, topped off with neurosis.
But Mother, Father, and the doctor all said the same thing,
They said the dread, is so widespread that most have felt the sting.
Broke my mind by isolation, emotions pushed aside,
But crying is quite gratifying, freshens me inside.
Every now and then the panic seems to reemerge,
But now I know that letting go can help relieve the scourge.
With love and help you can rebuild, and start again to climb,
Just like a cold is nothing bold, and can be healed with time.
The fear was great that I would lose respect and be decreased
The stigma fights with all its might, so let us fight the beast.
